way to tell if rebuilt?

Post by 77_Bus_Girl » Wed May 16, 2007 5:42 pm

Is there some way to tell if an engine has been rebuilt already? How many times can one be rebuilt?

I've got an engine in the garage, but have NO idea of it's history. The PO just game it to me. Is there a way to tell if it's rebuildable?

leak down test will tell you the condition of the rings and valves.
other than that, off with its heads!
pull a piston/cylinder and measure the rod side to side clearance with feeler gauges. That tell me quickly how much the rods have been worn....if its in spec usually everything else is too. You can't look at the bearings but you can
look at the cam lobes and pull a lifter to look at the face wear.

If the cam/lifter is really worn then it should be rebuilt. You can pull off the top ring off the piston and put it in the bottom of the cylinder and measure the ring gap to see if its in spec. :drunken:

Once the head is off oversize pistons are usually marked as such.....

If it's been align bored it should be stamped, 020 or 040. On Type 1's it's usually on the oil cooler flange/pedestal, not sure about Type IV's though.

I've been sorta busy helping friends move all weekend, so I never got over to the depths of my garage. Now my back is killing me from all that carrying. I'll try to look this week.

thanks everyone!
Love your bus.
