clutch and flywheel

Post by chitwnvw » Mon Apr 02, 2007 12:25 pm

I'm gettting ready to reinstall my clutch and flywheel. It's the same hardware that I removed a few weeks back, and appears in pretty good shape. That said, is there any prep that should be done before I bolt it back up?

I would clean all the friction surfaces with either denatured alcohol or laquer thinner, wire brush the bolt threads and clean with the same solvents as the friction surfaces then install with loctite and torque to spec.

Put a dab of grease in the pilot bearing.

Make sure they're matched up correctly. Apparently, I did this wrong once and it caused the Squareback to have more vibrations than it should, as Colin likes to remind us on occasion. :flower:

Also put a lite smear of grease on the input shaft guide sleeve.

How we learn. . . . . it is a beautiful thing.
Chi, if you have any chatter marks on the flywheel or pressure plate friction surfaces, sand them off with 220 grit sandpaper by carefully going around the circle at a 45* angle then back at a 45* angle. You will end up with a 90* hatch pattern. Do it twice even. Then wipe with lacquer thinner and paper towels until there is no more grey transfer to the towel.

Thickness of the clutch plate should be 7-8 mm. Use a open end wrench to see if the thickness is within tolerence.

8+ . . . if a 7mm open end wrench slides over the edge of the clutch plate, replace plate. IIRC
