Installing taco plate

Post by chitwnvw » Sat Mar 31, 2007 2:50 pm

What's the trick on getting the taco plate installed and giving a good seal?

The plate itself isn't meant to mate up to the case when you put the bolts in and tighten them down, is it? It seems like it's just supposed to float, clamping down with that red rubber ring in the beveled area near the top of the opening. But mine seems to like to off kilter when I torque it down some. :-(

The two surfaces have to make contact otherwise the you could not get the proper torque on the bolt and when the two surfaces do contact each other they squish the red O ring making an oil tight seal. The two bolts are 6mm so the correct torque should ba 5 ftlbs or 60 inlbs.

What is the condition of your taco plate, has it been damaged?

It just requires a little futzing to keep things centered as you gently persuade the red ring to expand against the case hole as it rolls around the bevelled edge of the taco plate. If it goes crokked, back off a bit on the 10mm bolts and go at it again.
