75 Bay 1800 exhaust question

Post by StevesBug » Mon Mar 12, 2007 4:41 pm

I'll be starting a refurb soon on a 75 Riviera with 1800 fi. My question is
what to do about the heat exchanger / exhaust system. The stock stuff is
all there and appears to be in good shape, but I have read elsewhere
that the 1975 system is especially restrictive and makes the engine run hot.

I'm going to do a stock rebuild with either web or Raby cam and lifters,
and redone new AMC heads, so no hi perf stuff.

Can I use the stock system ( along with CHT guage ), or is it necessary
to get the 72-74 system ? Any experience from other 75 owners would be
appreciated.

First off, welcome to the forum. Although I'm not a 75 owner, I'll try to tackle your question anyway.
I haven't heard that particular complaint re: the 75 exhaust system. Perhaps someone will chime in on that. What I can tell you is the 72-74 setup is a simple straight forward design, not nearly as complex as 75 and up. That said, though, if your current setup is in good shape like you say, use it. Keep in mind a quality 75 and up muffler is NLA. That's what led me to the 72-74 heaterboxes when I got rid of my old muffler.
Hope that helps.

Your situation might depend on whether or not you will need to have your bus smogged. 75 has a cat. converter, etc.. and the 73-74 does not.

I talked to the local authorities and while it will have to get the smog
check, it doesn't need to have a cat if none was installed. It's been a
while, but I believe he had me check the fuel filler for an "unleaded only"
opening, and mine didn't have that. =D>

The '72-'74 system is probably the best way to go. You close your eyes, bite the bullet, endure the shock and pain, and then forget about it. It is a very fine simple system that was used on the 2.0 engines in Australia and South Africa all the way up to 1979.

Got everything I needed for the switch from Ken at thebusco.com. Took some emails back and forth to figure out what I needed for the tins. Got it figured out and cost about $250 for everything.

we have a devil of a time keeping this in stock because a few of the items are getting pretty rare. at the moment i have a wait list , should have more kits in a month or so. we have many of the individual items in stock.

Thanks everyone. Last wek I found a running 77 2.0 rebuilder, and the seller is including an exhaust/exchanger system from a 74.

This summer I'll contact Scott about whatever missing bits are needed.
