valve gap

i have for the longest time, adjusted valves at
TDC 1e, 1i, 2i and 4 e
rotate 360 3e,3i,4i and 2e

my reasons were 1) repositining in dirt twice instead of four times
2) 180 deg pulley marks are often are off or non-exist.

i finally checked the other day vs the standard method, and found 1 and opposing 3 were exact
but 2 and 4 were all too tight like 004

what causes that ? camshaft flopping around or ???

Adjust the valves only at TDC for that specific cylinder. Yes, the camshaft can shoved sideways by some other open valve. On worn engines or sloppy new cam bearings, the camshaft movement can move .001+
