I'm curious what that's going to cost per liter. Scared, but curious.

suddenly that Gibbs oil isn't going to seem as expensive.

I use Brad Penn as I can buy it in Seattle. My wife freaks out when she sees the price per quart....

I use Castrol 10/40winter20/50summer dino oil.
A) I have never had an oil-caused failure
B) When I applied my micrometer to the original 419,000 mile crankshaft of the Road Warrior and discovered that it was still in-spec, I freed up my mind for other concerns elsewhere.
If you come up with a compelling real life reason for me to change, let me know.

Yeah but the crankshaft isn't the wear spot with the non-zinc oils it's the lifters/cam area since they are non-roller types.

Okey dokey . . . I have never pulled apart one of my engines and found unusual wear in the camshaft. Here is July 13, 2007 in Bloomington, Indiana.

Image

The Road Warrior had 533,500 miles on it, which means the camshaft had 115,000 miles on it.

My first set of Febi lifters I had to replace because of eroded bottoms on them in May 2005 when the camshaft had about 70,000 miles on it. The second set of Febi lifters I had to replace in April of 2009 when the Road Warrior had 574,604 miles, and the camshaft had about 155,600 miles on it

We had a spate of lifter/camshaft issues which our vendors would have loved to blame on oil . . .

"Spate"! I'm lovin' the use of the language in this website. I'll bet every member here can read and write cursive!

Yes, that too did happen as the maker of the cam blanks and lifters changed to a Indian supplier that didn't have the metal composition right. Plus the oil changed deleting most of the zinc which was in oil to lube the cam to lifter surface. All old Chevys, Ford etc now are to use this zinc oil too unless you have roller lifters wear can/might/will set in. I buy my Brad Penn at a American Muscle car parts shop.
The only badly worn cams in a type 4 I have seen were the hydro lifter ones with nearly wiped lobes.

I'm not saying it was the oil, I'm not saying it wasn't the oil .. but obviously there was something wrong for this to happen in under 50,000 miles...

strongly suggested by T4Store Brad Penn which I can only see as net increase in odds MY engine will have a good lubrication life.
It can't be argued that Brad Penn could decrease life of a flat tappet engine.
It may not gum up and smell great like Castrol R, but it does smell well too..all those good cat clogging heavy metals, yeay for oils that clog.
long live the infinite vortex of the oil thread!!!!!!! :study: :shaking: :study:

Was the engine running before teardown?

Not very well, but yes. It was still running when I decided the best thing to do was pull off the highway, shut 'er down and call AAA...
