there were chunks of it stuck all over the screen :pale:

I wish I had taken this out sooner, but a long time ago I broke one of those strainer bolts by over-tightening it and have avoided touching them since then.
the seal itself is two pieces top/bottom - it just looks like one because of all the RTV coating the whole thing.

ya gotta love PO's. (those POS!) :geek:

Yeah Chris, those should be paper gaskets.

I just edited that part out of my original post. After scraping more and more RTV off of them, I realized there really was paper under it all!

I hate RTV on engines as most guys slop it on thinking more is better and the chunks break off and end up everywhere.

The PO of my 2276 was the same way. I had paper AND metal gasket under the RTV wad holding the (leaking) exhaust!

Im pretty sure my PO thought it was like Marvel Mystery Oil - just stick it everywhere and it'll magically make it better.

It should be noted - he was a professional video/table game and jukebox repairman.

Video games . . . don't like RTV instead of solder.
Table games . . . don't like RTV instead of silicone lubrication.
Juke boxes . . . don't like RTV instead of a counterweighted tone arm
. . . so why dump it all over your engine?
Colin
(still a nice quick engine though, huh?)

RTV, sparingly, has its legitimate uses on engines. These engines were certainly not intended for it though.

This is America. If less is good, more must be better, like magazine clips.
Colin :cherry:

(application-specific RTV on exhaust joints, yes. Black Ultra to fix a split vacuum hose, yes. Anything in contact with the lubrication system, absolutely not)

I'm just becoming comfortable with loctite. Red to seat new studs into cases and that sort of thing. Or at least replacement studs, they don't have to be new, just serviceable.

Don't let Gypsie read that.

RTV seams a stop-gap, time-buying application, until the real issue is addressed, not an ultimate solution. And trust me, I've witnessed some amazing RTV resurrection on shredded water-cooled Vanagon head gaskets that drove out after landing on the hook of a tow truck.
