I've never dropped the engine with the tranny. I can get my engine out in 20-45 minutes.
1. Remove the (rear-edit) tins, fan, shroud, drain oil, remove dipstick & fill tube. Place some paper towels in the fill tube hole to keep dust & dirt out.
2. Jack up the Bus.
3. Place the jack under the engine. When putting the jack under the engine use some blocks of wood to tilt the engine to the rear slightly (front is front). I use an ATV Jack. Much easier.
4. Do a little dance where you lower the engine just a bit and then pull the engine to the rear just before it scrapes the lip of the engine compartment. Then lower a little more and pull back a little more. Repeat as necessary. Make sure the clutch pressure plate fingers do not hang up on the input shaft. At that point do the same dance but with much smaller steps.
6. With the engine on the ground you may need to remove the carbs/FI if you can't jack the Bus up high enough to clear it. Don't forget to block all entry ways into the engine with paper towels.
