The walls on 87 mm cylinders are too thin to live in Bus, in my opinion. I had a set in my '69 that only lasted about 6000 miles before I started burning oil. Compare the cylinders from a set of 85.5 mm pistons and a set of 87 mm pistons and the difference is obvious...

I used Mahle pistons in my 1600cc single port engine I just rebuilt for my '69 Westy. I bought the ones from aircooled.net with the dishes in the top that lower the compression ratio slightly.

Yeah what's the deal with dished pistons?
And how come we can't get German P&Cs anymore?
Brazil, like everything else. They're like China of the VW world. Yeah yeah at least we can still git parts.

Helps to detune engine for cooler running under full throttle driving.

Are 88mm machine-in cylinders worth the $$? I hear they're reliable. Will they overwhelm the tower oil cooler with heat?
Also, do the heads need special machining to accept these larger cylinders?

There ya go. Wash the heck out of them with hot soap water and a nylon scrubber-backed sponge, rings out of the pistons carefully!, wrist pins too, rinse rinse rinse, coat with engine oil and stick em in individual freezer ziplock bags until assembly.

Hiya Colin,
Amskeptic wrote:....90.5mm cylinders might be your best bet if you want to increase size, but this option is best for a fully vetted later case (case savers, 10mm oil passages, doghouse cooler, dual relief, deep stud #3).......
I have another engine to build (no, not the current "project") and I was just idly wondering what your suggestion might be to get the biggest kick out of the engine without a sacrifice of too much reliability. This particular engine will be built on an AH Bus case which will allow it to be used in either the Bug or the Bus.
I have cancer.

It does not have me.

Thank you! I was wondering why you wanted them frozen for a bit there. I git it.
