do i need a puller for the crankshaft gear removal (type 4) or will it release with heat and tapping?

More than a puller is necessary if the gear has the proper interference fit. A press with the correct mandrel is required.

OK thanks...ill give it try with puller + heat. ..dont have access to press or mandrel...this is sidewalk mechanics !
i thought that because there is a woodruff key that it wouldnt have such a tight tolerance ?

Best to take it in for a correct machine shop removal, I am serious. One screwy screw-up and the gear will lock to the crankshaft and score like hell when you need to take it to the machine shop anyway. There is no puller extant that can correctly grab the gear with enough surface area to not damage it. You got that soft distributor drive gear and the #3 main bearing in the vicinity too. A lucky day of getting it off by yourself, means an unfortunately loose fit on the crankshaft at operating temperature and it will bang that woodruff key and wallow out the slot.dingo wrote:OK thanks...ill give it try with puller + heat. ..dont have access to press or mandrel...this is sidewalk mechanics !
