I agree. VW wouldn't have done it if it wasn't needed. Especially the R&D.
While I got yer ear, have you heard any horror stories about aftermarket doghouse coolers? I haven't been able to find anything, maybe that's good news.

Update: most aftermarket oil coolers are from China. Screw that. I called CIP1 and Kustom1. I'll try a couple more.

OEVeedub sells one "Euopean Union" but it's $70. Cleaning the old one may turn out to be cheaper and it's real VW.

Geeze, where was I before now, chiming in as want to do, "keep your original parts where possible!" Keep your original parts where possible! Only when you have grenaded your engine or split the cooler down a seam would you think of replacement.

Yeah I got this part from a junkyard from a HORRIBLY maintained Beetle, coated in engine oil for generations. The cooler was new-ish VW so I thought I'd give it a shot. All that glittery stuff makese me nervous but a $60 clean-job should fix it. (that's a lot of money)

That's stupid lot of money. Aren't there any friggen machine shops that will give you a nice little parts wash for $20.00, I got Jeffrey Blair's razor-bladed crankcase pressure tank sprayed for $20.00, both halves.

I gotta check around. That seems out of line. Plus I can't afford it.

Check your yellow pages for a radiator shop. They can clean it.

That's where I had my case halves cleaned. Twenty bucks or so to run it through their hot tank.

Fine enough for *aluminum* cases, but not recommended for magnesium.

I'm getting a new $@%$#@)(%#% oil cooler, no sense taking chances on a new engine.

Except that the new stuff cut out of new dies leaves sharp shards of aluminum and they do not dress the metal like the germans did. You may have more contamination for assembly than old cooler has soft carbon particles. When you get your new cooler, rinse it out and drain it in a perfectly clean glass jar. Let the solvent evaporate and see what you have remaining.
