Head Studs

Post by hambone » Tue Jan 27, 2009 2:43 pm

Think I need to order new ones...the old ones are stuck in the case, with many many miles on them.
I'm using them on a new dual relief case, with S/P heads. Would I buy "single port" studs? Or are they case-specific rather than the heads?
thanks

Studs are studs. They need to be the correct size to fit your case and they need to be the correct length for whatever heads you are using. When Joe in Brick NJ changed his engine from dual port back to single port on a shipping error, we just grabbed a bunch and test fit.

There ARE two different designs out there. The 8mm shanks are designed to stretch and contract more successfully. They also have a lower tightening torque. I like them. They maintain head security better than the straight 10mm studs which do not have as much compliance, they prefer to either rip out of the case or squish the heads which then loosen up when things get cool again.

Watch the kits though, some ARE for SP and DP specifically. Stay away from chromoly, AC.N sells OE VW 8mm stud kit that I picked up for $30 or so.

What hammy said but without the generalization. I did my product research and then some seat time in front of ze books and what was offered by many "in the know" is that the chromos aren't good because they do not expand with heat to the specs that VW wanted. Gotta be careful out there.....

Intake or exhaust? Temps at the carbs are pretty calm, underneath those babies see some serious action.
