Got an 81 vanagon engine hanging on the stand, waiting for cylinders and heads.
As I look at the heads, I am not sure that a regular valve spring compressor will fit between the springs, so I was wondering what folks use, and what does and doesn't work.
Autozone loans out these:

which would be ideal, but I am curious of this design fits and can do the job. I know I could just go rent it and find out, so please don't rip me for asking what I could find out myself but the store is not that close by, and it would help me out if someone who knows, could give me a yay, or a nay on it doing the job.
Thanks a lot for they time and sharing of experience.

Maybe see if you can rent a lever type unit since the engine is out.

They have a smaller footprint but are hard to use with the engine in.
The hook hooks onto the side of the head.
Remember that the valve will inevetibly drop into the combustion chamber unless you do something about it. Some use compressed air in the chamber. A mechanic buddy of mine fills the chamber with a clean piece of soft rope through the spark plug hole, leaving a little hanging out to pull it back.
I dunno.
