The dip stick dance..

okay .... I know this is a stupid newbie question... but going to ask anyways...

When checking the dipstick to check for oil/engine temps, I've read that you are supposed to grab the dipstick at the 'base', does this mean the bottom of the dipstick that goes into the oil, or does this mean at the top of the dipstick just below the handle.

Muir says you should be able to pass the stick back and forth between your hands without burning.
A hot engine will smell hot. You can also just touch any part of it, you'll know. Don't think so much about it, just feel it.

Handle end. With Type 4 engine, wait until you have pumped your gas to give it time to heat-soak through the fan housing traverse.
