I'm wondering if the socket is mild steel instead of plastic? I found this photo on that "other site" that may support that conclusion.

I used 8mm x 5/8" overall length zerks that I picked up at the local NAPA.

I drove the car yesterday and it seems perfectly fine.
IIRC, my new ball joints from Bus Boys had a plastic socket pressed inside the steel bowl at the top as you look at them installed. The 6mm zerks help prevent you from having to thread them in too deep. Or something. I'll let you know what I find when I attack the BobD's originals.
