Re: Wheel Bearing Repack II (bw pig)
Thats the outer bearing race and it's replaceable, in fact a new bearing comes with one. A very large screwdriver will pry the seal out. The outer race will tap out from the back side with a punch and hammer.

Any progress in the rear wheel bearing write up?Amskeptic wrote:Well, now that I have the BobD, perhaps I could do a preemptive rear wheel bearing repack for the sake of longevity and an article.RSorak 71Westy wrote:I would like to see this done for the rear.

Re: Wheel Bearing Repack II (bw pig)
Why no. Things have changed since I last visited this thread. Now I have a 1970 bus to itinerate with. A write-up using that car will have to wait until I have the time over the summer.jmstu76 wrote:Any progress in the rear wheel bearing write up?Amskeptic wrote:Well, now that I have the BobD, perhaps I could do a preemptive rear wheel bearing repack for the sake of longevity and an article.RSorak 71Westy wrote:I would like to see this done for the rear.

Re: Wheel Bearing Repack II (bw pig)
Stylin! There's something so much more aesthetically pleasing about those early bay bumpers.
Nice colour too - but hard to tell - is it grey or more like olive?
I guess it's a deluxe too with the chrome trim.
Beauty.

There ain't no *need* for no apologizing, I just need to get to it.jmstu76 wrote:I apolagize for not keeping current on the latest itenerant vehicle. Is the Bob D. no longer?
The BobD is very much longer, but I am newly aware of the fact that it is all original German and the more I am exposed to today's world of crap replacement parts, the less I want to over-expose myself to the experience of that car, not to mention expose it to a grind of marathon driving when it should be driven strictly for the joy of it. Now Chloe, that's different. Chloe needs to driven a lot! to get the Road Warrior-esque Everything Has Been Addressed trust factor.

Re:
VW says "11-14 ft-lbs."Tighten the 6mm lock bolt in the nut when you are done. Not too crazy, it locks the nut onto the spindle threads very effectively:
Colin said 12 ft-lbs. at our penultimate meeting.
I under-guessed at 5 ft-lbs., and was corrected. Good thing the spindles are threaded to avoid wheels falling off; I've only ever used 5 ft-lbs and maybe toasted my bearings. ELEVEN TO FOURTEEN!

Re: Re:
I have seen over-tightening actually distort the steering spindle threads so the nut hangs up on each rotation as you take it off. Those little clamp bolts are powerful. I say, I say, I say eleven.asiab3 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2017 6:46 pmVW says "11-14 ft-lbs."Tighten the 6mm lock bolt in the nut when you are done.
