right/left/shouldered bolts

i know on the late bays the shoulders are supposed to go on top. but whats the difference between right and left calipers? why the shouldered bolt?

The calipers must be indexed R or L to ensure that the caliper pistons/shims have the cut-outs correctly positioned on the lower, leading edges.
