I dropped the engine long ago and nothing has been supporting the trans ever since--including during transport.
I thought I remember being told by someone that such support wasn't necessary.
Is it? Or ain't it?

No worries. You have two big bolts holding up the bell housing just above the two bolts that mate the upper part of the bell housing to the engine case. And, unless you removed the bolts that hold the nose of the transmission, you have those in place too.
