Hardest Oil Change Ever

Post by omacdon2 » Mon Sep 21, 2020 1:23 pm

Hey guys. I'm having a lot of trouble trying to do an oil change on my bus because the oil plug won't come undone. I don't know if the thing is welded on or something. I got a ratchet extension tool to try to put more force on it but the more I try, the oil plug is starting to strip. How would you go about this?

EDIT:Ignore, please. Assumed was VW trans, not Subaru.

That thang is not a stock trans fill/drain plug. The stock item had a 17 mm
hex socket, and had a taper fit in the trans case. Before proceeding, you should be prepared to deal with
damaged drain hole threads. They may already be damaged, and that's why whoever stuck
that thang in there. You might just want to decide to leave it alone. According to VW, later
bus trannies ('70 on up) do not require oil changes - ever.

Pipe wrenches are really good at grabbing rounded-off bolt heads.

Thanks for your reply. That's good to know. I forgot to mention that I have a Subaru ej 22 engine in the bus from a 1995 legacy. The previous owner put the engine in and I'm still learning about it. I bought an oil extractor tool with a pump to try to remove the oil from the dipstick hole instead. Gonna try it first thing tomorrow.

Is that drain plug on the engine or transmission?

The drain plug is on the oil tank below the engine but I bought a fluid extractor from Harbor Freight and it worked! Pumped the oil out from the dipstick hole easily without having to mess around with the drain plug again. Best purchase ever
