76 FI cranks no start

Post by skip » Tue Feb 28, 2017 10:58 am

Could sure use some help. 11 month old DieHard battery died (could jump and start), Sears replaced said it was bad. I install new replacement and bus starts, I walk to the back and bus shuts off and refuse to start again. Put my fuel pressure gauge on...zero psi. Put table spoon of gas down S boot runs on that. Remove Bosch fuel pump and test on 12V supply sprays fuel ok, put it back on bus, cranks no start. Look for Colin's dual relay diagram, no 12v at 88d even if I move wiper in AFM (pins 36-39) to run pump. Relay maybe 2 years old, tap on it no change. 12V at coil. What should I do next?

Do you get the "click" of the double relay when a helper turns the ignition on and you listen intently? Do you get another click when you move the wiper with the key on?

Do you have 12v at terminal #15 on the coil with key on? And at terminal #86c on the double relay with the key on?

We can put ourselves in a small hell with a weak battery trying to figure out why the FI system misbehaves during cold starts… Keep up the sleuthing!

Thanks Robbie, No helper and I'm hard of hearing. Have 12v on coil and 10.5V on 86a. Revisited the battery connections and found on the + connector the smaller wire was loose. I probably did it trying to get the old battery out. Good call. I'm glad Sears replaced it DieHard gold (3yr replacement) AGM 34R (it was $178.99)
and I bought last March. ( lasted 11 months). I'm going for a ride, yahoo.
