Other Silliness.

Post by ruckman101 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 6:48 pm

I dug out my ancient model kits and have tackled two to date. This is the second.

Silly, I know, rubber band powered, and, from efforts to finish it, a dwindling number of materials producers. No more Ambroid glue, finding the paints and "dope" was darn near a task of futility. Am I getting old or what.

aaaahh, you made me reminisce....vividly remember the smell of dope. I did an old Free Flight gas model and put R/C gear in it, finished in silk and dope to keep the period correctness. That plane still sits in my mom's attic. could get a pretty good high off that stuff... :shaking2:

I built a couple of balsa models back in the day as well, and also fondly remember the cloyingly sweet aroma of the dope.

A couple of years ago, I stumbled across a Guillows B-17 kit in a curio shop in Moss Landing. I had lusted after one of those in my youth, so I snapped it up for the princely sum of $10. It' still sitting in the box waiting for me to get to it.

Get to it . . . purty piece of history. Those wings look like very slow speed profiles? Is that how they did it for dog-fighting?

Alas, there is crossover concerns. I've had these buried since I got them. They are history. I didn't throw anything out. Sun oxidized tissue that crumbles when put to application. A collection of parts without plans and plans without parts. And questions.

What size propeller should be on the nose of this model. How many strands of rubber. The plans were unclear and all the propellers kind of conglomerated, and, and, yep that crossover.

About like keeping Bertha and Gretchen going and improving.

Found a website, it looks like I might be able to match parts without plans to plans and plans without parts to parts.

I don't know about you, but that made my head spin.

Here's the first nearest completion, just have to balance a bit, and then it will be so much heavier than it already is that the only hope I have is a civil taxi.

And some more shots, all arty and all ya know.

There is a contractor over here that builds flying planes, the past two days he has flown a F-22 around our compound. I am wondering if he is driving the Taliban or others nuts thinking it is a new drone out there! Here is a shot of it passing overhead, it sure is fast but I like Ruckmans better!

I stick to the rubber powered free flighters.

And with my recently revived tissue paper covering skills, I have finally gotten an old Kenmore bed lamp relic I've been carting around for decades a dandy new shade. It has been only a wire mesh all this time.

The clean design lines of this lamp, along with an elegant simplicity and integrity function are elements that have attracted me to it and kept me lugging it about all these years, so keeping it to a similar austerity.

Yikes, lol.

Nothing that ambitious. Just a rebuild. New paint, new power delivery system, newfangled bulb.

That reminds me. I have a de Havilland Beaver on floats model to complete. It is plastic, but it's pretty cool. I got sidetracked mid way through painting. Back in '02. I believe. :shaking:
