Latley I have been priming and painting tins. Amazing how nice they turned out.
I have also been watching the Bug Me Video trying to catch some pointers. I should of watched it before I put two of the pistons on the rods already :blackeye:
What is the consensus regarding the cylinder shims/gaskets?
Jake installed the lower one (w/ aviation sealer) but not the upper one between the head.

I'm reading the tech bulletin but it's only seems to be speaking of the 2L engines. Does it apply to the 1700 (CB)?

The Tech Bulletin, as you read, was addressing one issue with three steps.
2.0 engines were scuffing their pistons under hot load. That is all.
1) notch rods to cool pistons
2) expand cylinder bore to stay away from hot pistons
3) delete sealing rings to promote faster heat transfer as above

Some people have decided to conclude that the sealing washers were being deleted because they were "bad". They argue the loudest.

What IS your deck height?

Sorry bout that. Didn't see this question at the end. I ended up having a buddy come by to help with that part. He set compression to stock 7.4:1. Not sure where the numbers ended up, he tried explaining, but I shut down mentally when numbers fly :pale: I do recall him saying he likes to set the deck a little tight (?) Dunno, he had the shims I needed on hand and also lapped my cylinders in before everything got bolted up for the final time.

The tins are all painted and look great. I have been working on cleaning the shroud getting it ready for paint. Also waiting on parts that I ordered to roll in. Basic stuff, Plugs,Wires,Cap,Rotor,Oil Filter.

Get them down in writing. Really. Endplay, too. Connecting rod clearances and main bearing clearances, as well.
Get them down in writing and stick them in an envelope in the glove box or in your VW file. Cover your bases.

Colin: I didn't tear into the case, so no internal readings. End play was at .005 before I dis assembled but will be re-checked. I do have the specifics written down... on the back of something... somewhere :blackeye:

Hambone: Only pic I have is where it sits now.. I decided to take apart the fan shroud to clean and paint. Once this is finished the rest will go together rather quickly.

Still hoping I can get the photo back of the timing marks
Got the tins bolted down, Carbs on, Thermostat, etc... I still need to figure out the rest of the tin. I still have 2 big pieces I need to blast at my buddy's shop, too big for my cabinet. Also still need a few things before she goes in, timing pointer and engine seal off the top of my head, I'm sure there is more...

Looks BEEFY with the carbs on :drunken:

Well, I thought I was slick. Searching for a new coil I see prices averaging $50. I checked rockauto.com and found Bosh Coil for $28... Only 8 Left!! Ordered it quickly, it arrived quickly, and I was quickly disappointed. :blackeye:

It is not the same Bosch I have come to know and love.

Different colors and Made in Brasil. It also doesn't fit in the coil bracket unless I need to muscle the bolt in ??

Edit: It did come with a spankin new type 1 bracket though :cheers:

Sure has been a while. Time for an update...

I recently had to move so with temporary type 1 engine in, dry rotted tires, and borrowed plates from my Baja, I loaded all my VW stuff into the back of the Bus.

and hit the road.. I got about 6 miles before my drivers side front tire blew,

after swapping on the spare we realized it was just as bad..
