Colin came to visit this past weekend, and broke the news that I would need a rebuild; only have 80 lbs of pressure in number 4; rest were at 120-140. Low compression due to a poorly seating valve.
The engine was rebuilt about 40k ago, so would like to salvage what I can, if I can. I know I'll need new heads (or work on these heads if I can find a decent machine shop).
So what components can possibly be recycled, and how can I tell if they really can be recycled?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Need advise on engine overhaul
Based on how it runs, just do the heads. Check crankshaft end-play, no more than .006-7" (I like .004" with a fresh engine) and pull a lifter to see how the surface looks. Pitted or scored, check the camshaft lobes. If any piston is unusually wet or carbony, you might have a little oil control issue that may require investigation, like pulling the cylinder and inspecting it and the piston. If they are tan/black dry light carbon, yay.TrollFromDownBelow wrote: The engine was rebuilt about 40k ago,

We are pretty sure it is a leaky valve that requires headwork. The inspection of the pistons for oil/carbon is merely to tell us if the engine needs additional work.chitwnvw wrote:What tells you that the pressure leak is from the valves and not the rings?
