Engine compartment overhead fan

Post by chitwnvw » Sat Sep 23, 2006 9:42 am

I have a red wire going to the overhead fan (not the inline fuse), anyone know where it goes to?

Also anyone know what the ampage on the inline fuse going to the fan is?

The fuse rating is 16 amps. If your fan is worn (like mine) you'll blow a fuse every 10 minutes.

I'm looking at the color wiring diagram (but I am color blind). It looks like the red wire goes to the starter solenoid with an inline fuse. Which would be the one you say it isn't. Green goes to the switch in the dash. & blue tees into the blue VR wire. Don't see a 2nd red.

Just went out and looked at mine, only one red wire and it goes to the fuse. Sloggo's right with the 16 amp rating. Could it possibly have anything to do with those two cut red wires from that lock on your engine compartment door? Just a thought. :-k

I didn't even put those together. Trace the extra wire and see where it goes. Maybe it was a cut off for the coil or starter or something?

Alright, there are two wires that actually go to the fan motor and some wise guy spliced a red wire onto the, it looks like it might be a brown wire. The other wire is yellow, I think with a blue stripe, some sort of stripe (it's rainy and dark around here). Sorry, I didn't get this right the first time, I should have look closer.

Just Kidding. :hippy2:

Back on topic. I have a wire that I added for a engine compartment light that taps off of the red wire. Maybe it's something like that.

What are the two wires going directly to the fan one has a stripe on it, the other one is solid and is the one I'm interested in?

I did some research in the grand old library called samba. I think the brown wire is the ground. I'm going to hook it under one of the firewall screws and see how it goes..

If the wire is original VW, it's a ground. The fan on mine has a female spade connector on the wire and a male spade on the fan mount.

The motor + has the yellow striped wire. Make the ground right at the ceiling mount, make it substantial to help keep the motor happy.
