Fuel Relay & VR fixed. New related problem.

Post by Sluggo » Wed Aug 30, 2006 8:14 pm

Fixed the VR problem today (which was actually a bad wire to the G & B Lights) and got the Fuel Pump Relay set up to work. New problem (that might have caused the VR problem). When I plug the relay running switch to the blue VR wire, the idiot light and brake light stay on. When I run the pump itself straight off the blue wire they also stay on. When I leave the pump and relays disconnected from that wire the lights work as they should (pump now running from coil).

Is the pump somehow grounding the VR wire?. Is there another wire that is only active while the engine is running that I could use as a running switch?

By "relay running switch" you mean?
Those warning lights turning on means a ground path has been created.
Your fuel pump relay should not be doing that. Is it a simple (no diode) relay with (hot)30>87(pump +) and (blue wire)85>86(ground)? I had 15 years running the fuel pump directly off the blue with this set up, and now I have 7,000 miles with a cheap little relay to take the amperage load off the blue wire, and it has been no problemo.

Relay running switch = blue wire (acts as a switch for the relay to start the running power for the pump)

The problem happens even when I run the pump straight off the blue wire. With no relay involved. Also, when the relay or just the pump are connected to the blue wire, my volt meter drops from 14.5 to 12.

I look forward to checking it out. Ithink your alternator rotor/field circuit has a blown diode or sumpin.

Yeah, I'm interested to see where this one goes too.

Ended up needing to replace the pump. When I run the new/old pump off of the blue wire all is fine. When I get the relay setup involved I get the same problem. Light stays on.

I switched the running & ground wires as suggested. Still the same exact problem. Add this to your list for TuesdayColin.
