Temp Sensor II Fun

Post by drober23 » Wed Jun 29, 2016 10:45 am

Hi, crawling out from under my rock for a minute...

The bus had been having a cold start problem that was getting progressively worse. It would start up great, run a minute or two, then stall. It would then require a couple minutes (2-5) before it would start again, at which point it would run fine. Then it started running a bit worse after the restart and I knew I had to sort it out.

I did all the usual things. Made sure my ignition connections were shiny clean and snug (they were ok). Eradicated any vacuum leaks (one minor one in the FI breather tube). Set valves (fine), checked timing (fine), new points/condenser (it was time). The problem was unchanged.

I disconnected the AAR and checked its function. It was fine.... So, last on my list (because I was sure it was fine) was the Temp Sensor II. I went to remove it and noticed it was loose. Removed it, it tested fine. Replaced and sugged it down and BANG! I got my bus back! It does idle a bit slow (stalling occasionally) when cold, but the cold start problem is gone and it feels much better to drive.

Thought I would share. Gotta get here more often, I miss reading all the adventures folks are having.

Anyway, we'll be camping in the bus a few times this summer, including a trip to Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. Maybe I'll get to that body work some day.

An NTC thermistor should be able to handle the requirements of L-Jet. I'll play around with some ideas before I lose access to my electronics division at work next week. :pirate:

Some companies sell threaded options, but I'm thinking a ring-terminal style would be just as easy, considering there are FAR more options availabel from the market right now. We'll probably end up with a $4 replacement that you slip onto an engine case screw and use a second nut.

Mark, Bus Depot wants $99.00 for the damn thing? What is wrong with them? Start learning to shake the trees a little. You might get an unexpected coconut.

Interesting. Let us know when you get them if they are the correct part. When I do a direct search of that part# it comes up at that price but when you go into the Porsche section and look it up the only one they show in stock for a '74 2.0ltr 914 is a Bosch unit for $81!

They are being shipped to Atlanta. Do the look-up by part number only. Who knows if car nameplate searches go to different price lists, you know? I just put in your VW Type 3 D-Jet part number and got socked with the $81.00 ea. It asked me if I knew it would fit my "1974 Porsche Targa"?

How did your tree shaking work out? One of the links was broken, the only I could find on eBay was over $100, ordered 2 from Pelican, two days later get an email that they are NLA and they refunded my money. Pretty much got hit on the head by the falling coconut.

Try AutoHausAZ.com

They typically have weird names for parts. I think the last TSII I ordered had "coolant sensor" listed, but the part number was still the same. Their link system is also broke, so I can't copy paste.

I'm working on sourcing an alternative that would be within 10-20ohms of Ratwell's chart. What is the thread of the hole each year? Didn't earlier models have a slightly different spot? I can not find the answers from my phone right now.

Hippiewannabe bypassed the TS II by sticking in a Radio Shack potentiometer right in the dash with a 1970's AM radio looking knob, 0 ohms to 5,000 ohms, has a great time with it. Says he just raises the resistance when the head temps go up, and dang if they don't come back down.
