Fuel pump ?

Post by 72Hardtop » Fri Jun 20, 2014 12:30 am

Received my new flange for the fuel pump. After installing the pump with (2) gaskets (inboard & outboard) of the Bakelite flange I'm still getting a small drop of oil right at the lower apex of the pump closest to the ground (lower bolt) right where the fuel pump & gasket meet. The odd thing is I made a few errands with wife and checked it several times and it was bone dry. Once home I checked it again....dry. But after it cooled down went out and checked it and there was a a small amount clinging to the pump (enough to wet tip of finger).

Anyone remember the torque spec for those bolts? My guess is they're not tight enough. I even went as far as to remove the pump again to check everything. When I put everything back together I applied a very thin layer of Black silicone RTV on each side of the flange then on the gaskets. Then allowed them to skin well prior to install. I was careful not to tighten the bolts up much. I'd get them finger tight then about 1/4 turn or so with the 12 point.

As I said it does not leak while running.

Is the black RTV oil-proof?

This is classic gasket seating behavior. 13 ft/lbs initial installation torque. After a couple of heat cycles, you need to re-torque, preferably before any leak gets a start on you. Don't use that RTV crap, use case sealant Hylomar or readily available Permatex Aviation. Paper gaskets love sealants that know how to permeate the paper fibers. RTV crap does not. It does know how to skin, break off, and act like a blood clot.

I was out of Hylomar. I ended up using the Hi temp black max oil resistance RTV. What I put down was so thin you could nearly see thru it. Torque on those bolts is 18 ftlb. No more oil leak  . It turned out I didn't have them tight enough. My sense of feel for torque is much better using a ratchet then an open end wrench.
