Fuel pump fitting leaking

Post by 72Hardtop » Fri Jun 06, 2014 8:14 pm

I just noticed the outlet fitting on my fuel pump is leaking (just enough to wet tip of finger) right where it enters pump. What's the recommended sealant to hold this in place? I have some JB Weld and Permatex threadlocker blue (med strength). I'm going to need to get this fixed before going home since I just noticed it after arriving to work.

I take it I don't need to remove the pump? I have some fuel clamps (2). (I'd rather not have to.)

If I repair this with either the JB Weld or the Loctite will it be alright to drive afterwards?

Crawled under and upon looking a it closer...tugging on it did nothing and seems very snug. But when I try and twist with a wee bit of effort it has subtle movement met with resistance. Went ahead and wrapped a tuff-cuff from the clamp then across and around the filter screen port.

Update:

I pulled the pump. Then removed the outlet side fitting. It was still in firmly and required turning left and right to remove. I then clean everything using acetone and Q-tips. I then carefully knurled the end of the pipe that inserts into the pump. Also clean the pump outlet port as well with acetone/Q-tips.

Once clean and dry I then applied a thin coat of Permatex threadlocker blue on the outlet pipe and then inserted to full seated position (very firm going in). Once fully seated I staked the area around the outlet fitting. Also noticed that the inlet fitting had been staked previoulsy...added a few more for added safety.

Once done with staking I then whipped up some JB-Weld mix (non quick setting) then applied a coat over the staked areas and up the side of the pipes a bit.

That SOB ain't going anywhere :yawinkle:

Now waiting for arrival of my new fuel pump flange. noticed it had a crack and was weeping a small amount of oil (just enough to blow back on the case). I despise leaks!

What . . . . . is a "tuff cuff"?

I have never used Loctite on a slip fitting. Just a tiny amount of JB weld on the "shoulder" of the fitting as you slide it in usually does the job. Forever.

Tuff-cuff...aka nylon locking strap or zip-tie. Used the large ones when I worked as a police officer.

Thought about using JB on the pipe but it's very thick and will be forced out when slipping the pipe fitting in the outlet port. The threadlocker has very thin viscosity and will remain while inserting the pipe. Once dry the threadlocker swells slightly and seals the fitting allowing for a tight interference fit. Also added the staking & JB-Weld afterwards as an added measure of holding force.

For future reference, my vacuum retard fitting came out of my carb last summer on a trip, and I only had red loctite with me. I still to this day can't pull that fitting out of the carb to secure it properly, so I ignore it and trust in the red loctite.
