Who makes a decent early bay longblock?

Maybe this is the wrong forum, but I been a bit pressed for time. Ain't gonna send off my case for machining and hope they get it right the first time. The lifter bores need sleeved as well as a bearing saddle align bore.
I need a 1600 single port long block and don't want to get "GEX'ed." New frow VW Mexico factory would be fine of they are still available....as long as it has the mustache bar mounting bosses on the rear for a Bus.
Anybody wanna link me up? Thanks.

cheers,
Rob

Looks like single ports are hard to come by. Might have to buy a long block and swap heads or go towards the darkness and get all dual-portycracky weaknew upper tins and manifold and crapass carburetor with a centrifugal +vacuum distributor.
It can be done. . .

I have no idea if this is what you need or any idea as to the manufacturer/quality. All it does is satisfy the requirements of "1600 single-port". I can't even tell from the photo if it actually has the bus mustache bar mounting bosses. It says it fits a '67 bus. Maybe worth further investigation.

If it's just the case that you're concerned about, maybe a short block is all you need?

I note that AVP is still in business. Though I wouldn't buy another Vanagon engine from them, maybe their Type 1 engines are more carefully built.

Not sure, but I think I remember reading that Mid-America resells GEX engines.

My previous 1600 longblock was purchased from Aircooled.net. They were reselling engines from AVP. They were reselling engines from JCS. Long story short, it was a piece of junk.

The current single port (longblock) came from Art at ACE (Air Cooled Engineering). It wasn't cheap but I've been happy so far.

Not at all surprised, given my own AVP experience. Just wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Well, you get what you pay for.
Actually, that's not at all guaranteed. About all one can say with perfect certainty is that you won't get what you don't pay for.

Thanks fellas. I'm willing to pay for quality. I don't know who builds for MAM....maybe JCS still. There rebuild kits have been satisfactory, IMO, but I have no experience with their assembled engines. I do need heads, so a shortblock is off the table. I'll try calling ACE and offroadmotors.
Colin I would love a rotating blitzomatic carburetor conversion version...on your bus.

cheers,
Rob

Mighty handsome cases. Haven't heard anything about them in terms of folks who have made the investment. And it is an investment. Not a long block, though.
