Those BOSCH and VW Engineers knew what they were doing after all.

Stock settings will be a great way to establish a (new/digital) baseline. A great way to help others in their voyage towards digital fuel and ignition management. The only way I can see this engine management improve is to go to stock fuel map equivalent, and address areas where L-Jetronic could not compromise...

...and that's just it.. L-Jetronic is always, in a way, a compromise. You move the wiper one way, you loosen the spring, and now your skewed all three points. A shift and balancing act in trying to find out what your particular engine likes. In perfect world, the AFM was never meant to be messed with, and in that same perfect world, it is not AFM that changes but everything around it.
I am still in hell trying to understand things I cannot understand.

There is a graph that makes my eyes hurt. It is the Four Axes AFM graph that plots:

fuel flow
air quantity
voltage signal to ECU
flap angle

I need to know how to read it. It is locked away on a PDF page.

Still trying to find base points and absolute parameters. I *want*
13.8 cruise
22+ off-throttle at speed
11.3 low-speed full throttle 12.3 70 mph full-throttle
14.3-14.8 idle that drops the a/f immediately upon throttle application

I told my cylinder head temps, "sod-off, I don't even care" because, they don't care.

Very doable. We could make you a plug and play system you could test it in 2017.

Awesome video, thanks for sharing!

In other news I'm still waiting for Wrights to send the parts over the pond for my faulty transmission :(

Hopefully I'll get it back in time for spring, watch this space...

I'm back!

So... after getting my transaxle back from the shop in January, finding out we were pregnant, spending the summer decorating the house ready for the new arrival and then becoming parents I finally got the time to put the engine and transaxle back in the bus last weekend. Woop!

I dialled in the last set of ignition, afr and fuel tables that you posted (which were a fantastic help) and you know what, considering I just dialled them in and burned them to the megasquirt he's running not too bad, I also have 4 forward gears too which helps 😉

How's tricks with you @luftwagon?

I hope things are going well and of course I'd be really interested to see any mods or tweaks you made to your tune or setup!

Oh, and we had a boy, baby Oscar 😎

Cheers, hope to hear from you! Deano

Hello chewabledrapery - things are well. Congratulations on your new arrival!

Gutted the van for a carpet/hardwood floor job; and ended up replacing the rear windows with ones that open; addressed a rust spot under one of the windows, and under the galley. I also toyed with an idea of installing 2nd row seats, and removing the galley, for (then) upcoming 3000 mile trip to Disney. We are a family of four, and as much stuff I could unbolt out of the van, the Mrs. could double back in luggage - 4 bicycles, double stroller.. you name it.. Accidentally, I run into a great deal on a 31' motor home, and bought it instead of torturing the van, and pulling a trailer behind it.

Now the van sits, gutted, waiting for the 2nd accessory battery to be installed, and modifications to the interior performed. I was never a big fan of the P22 Westfalia Interior. No propane range (actually good in my opinion), icebox w/o refrigeration (wish it was more efficient), but also a lot of space wasted with 10.6 gal water tank under the bench, very limited kitchen cabinetry compared to other westfalia models, and a funky clothes locker, that could not fit any of my jackets, helmets.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing with the van.. maybe let @Amskeptic take it for a spin around the US in 2018?

Hey,

Oh my that motorhome is awesome!

You are sure gonna have some brilliant times in that, something that big wouldn't even fit on some of the roads here in the UK 😂

Well good luck with it mate and I hope you make a decision on the van, if I make any progress with my tuning I'll add to the thread to help others 👍

Nice one

Let's plan a mini-Itinerary experiment. Do I get a full laptop gauge complement?

Full Westy P22 Interior.

Also, I will give you a full run-down, wiring diagram, and training on the µSquirt setup. Before you leave, we'll make a backup of the system, and install Dakota digital. :salute:

It would be the February 13-20 lap to Miami FL. Miami requires good liability insurance. From Little Rock, that would be about 2,356 miles.

I don't think I'll have the van ready by then.
