Hello all!
In the course of trying to determine why my Vanagon's heat has been lacking, I discovered the P/O seems to have decided life would be much more agreeable without the piece of engine tin that pipes fresh air in from the top of the engine, down to the passenger's side heat exchanger. I have a 1981 California spec motor and am hoping to source this component or at least get the proper part name as otherwise I'll be stuck playing telephone charades trying to describe it. In the following photo you can see where the heat exchanger currently draws not-heat from the air;
