Thanks Neil. I cranked the engine and all valves looked just as they should be.
Bob. What should I check on the distributor? The points are working for #1 and #2 and the compression is high enough for ignition to occur.
What the hell is left?

Make sure there's point gap at all four distributor lobes.

Bad distributors are not always visual. You can tell if they're not advancing correctly with a timing gun, or suck on the vacuum can, but otherwise a pro shop must check it.

I held the sparkplugs to the engine and got nice fat sparks. Its a 009 distributor.
I keep going back to the idea that I have compression, spark, air and fuel, and at the right time so why is one side running and the other isn't?

Impossible. You're missing something. Follow your intuition, answers that come in dreams. No foolin'.

O.k. so you have spark. We won't hold the 009 against you, yet.

I'd verify the other ingredients. You posted earlier that you had good compression, and now we know you have spark. Are you sure you're getting fuel and air to that side of the engine?

I'm gonna go and re-check that air fuel condition, but how would that get blocked on one side?
How would I best do that anyway? Just pull the plug wires on the 3/4 side and run it and then pull the plugs and look for wetness?

OK. I obviously don't know how to read spark plugs.
I traded plugs from 3/4 with 1/2 and traded the symptoms from left to right. I thought that if the plugs sparked strongly to the engine when held by hand they would function when screwed into the head. guess not.
The plugs are all black (to rich). I started out with the volume screw turned out 6 half turns. Not enough? Where should I have started?
Does one clean plugs or just get new ones?
But why would they only foul on 1/2?

Just had to fess up to what prob would have been obvious to some here.

Whew. I think I would check the gap and yes, clean up the gummed up two and run in #1 and #2 to see if the clean ones from #1 and #2 now in #3 and #4 gum up just as quick.

Glad to see a creative approach isolated the issue.

I started with the volume (small) screw out 2.5 turns, got the idle going 800 or so rpm by turning out the air by-pass (large) screw, then dinked with the volume (small) screw again until I found the fastest idle, then backed the volume (small) screw back until a just discernible drop in the idle is noticed, then got the idle rpm back to 800 or so with the air by-pass (large) screw. Then check the timing again. The Bentley procedure.

But before you want to monkey with the carb, valves need to be adjusted spot on, and timing needs to be adjusted spot on.
