Generator brushes, 71 beetle

Hey. Changing brushes on my beetle. Does the generator turn to access the bottom one that is a PITA to get to? I've loosened the bracket ... but seems to be bolted in somewhere in back (front) under tin. Any tricks or do I stand on my head, click my heels three times and hope for the best? Thanks.

There are 4 bolts around the perimeter of the circular fan shroud in FRONT of the generator. The lower 2 are tuff to get to.
I think most people replace the lower brushes without rotating the generator. I did mine with engine out of bus.
If you do try to rotate, be sure to rotate it back to the exact spot. There is a cooling flap inside the shroud that must line up properly.

Yeah, they're in. That bottom one is a total pain in the ass.
Absolutely true, but I will happily do the brushes in a bug over a bus.
Glad you got it done, add it to your increasing body of knowledge.

i did brushes last autumn on my 68 doublecab. i found the job trying my patience, but i got smart using a 2"x3" mirror positioned just right, along with a med-short screwdriver. something to think about when the engine is pulled.

Yeah, all that and I added a tiny glob of RTV to the screw / brush connector to keep everything from falling apart when my screwdriver made initial contact. Still a pain in the ass. But oh what a feelin' when my screwdriver made 3/4 of a revolution and the 1st thread was in
Glad I won't have to do that for another 10 years. (actually, the last pair lasted about 14 years...yeah, had this car for a while
)
