Help! I have started taking my body off...and cannot get the danged steering box out....is there a trick to this? My Bentley gives instruction for a standard, which seems much easier...

My major malfunction is not removing the steering linkage at the box end...that was dumb. At some point, I shall have to pen a "what not to do" list.

You mean the pitman arm, when you say "linkage", or just popping off the tie rods to get free of the front suspension?

How are you getting the body off? Rope and pulley in the garage/barn?

I could not get the tie rod ball joints loose, but the problem was the actual steering linkage from steering column to the box. The bottom ujoint has to be free for the box fit through the hole...
As for separating the body, I jacked the car up high, propped the body up across blocks, then lowered the pan. Getting it back together will be tricky. I linked the album above. The amount and location of dirt and rust makes me wonder if this was a flood car...

Good LORD, I had no idea you were in this thing like that.

We need pictures here, and your commentary.
Just grab an address off the hosted picture,

Use our IMG button (up along the top of the post window) to bracket, and voila!

I could not believe the date stamps on your pictures.
"I need to figure out how to disconnect the steering" pow! no floor pans! pow! new floor pans, pow! primed and painted chassis all in what looks like a week?

Flood car as in Katrina would show up in interior musty moldy.
A chronic diet of rainy day dirt roads would be a fine built up layer of silt in enclosed areas, but rinsed off near tires. White corrosion dust speckles all over the transaxle and engine with severe rust damage inside of engine and transaxle parts would suggest immersion damage.
Difficult call . . .
Man, are you just out there working in the yard come cold hell or cold high water? It was 30* here in Pensacola this morning, are you working out in that?

Yup. You know, some of us are committed...or should be. I will try to move some pics later. I hope to get a lot of painting done tomorrow. Waiting on parts to put the pan back on...then back to the motor.

Bringing home the new toy.

Image

Inside, after removing seats and door panels.

Image

First round of body work.
It appears to have been wrecked a few times...nose and rear and beat up. Hood and front left fender are off of a grey and bright green bug, respectively.

Image

Sides will be white; everything else red.

Image

Sunday morning...

Image

Still in this shape; waiting on the gasket and a new accelerator cable. I'm afraid the old one is rusted inside the tube...

Image

First coat on the interior. Every spray sent up a plume of dust, dirt, and grossness from God knows where. I'm still contemplating the removal of the headliner. I'm afraid it will disintegrate.

Image

Image

Painting the underside was not enjoyable...

I'm planning to do CV joints and new brake lines and hoses while the pan is off, as well as my recently broken accelerator cable. Is there anything else I should plan to do while it's apart?

Once I get the body bits out of the shop, I can worry about interior and engine. The wiring has me very concerned. The previous owners and four legged tenants have done a number on it.

For future reference, one must right click each image from Google+, choose "open in new tab," then copy that URL, which ends in .jpg. Silly computer witchcraft. This is why I still use film.

I still have some Kodachrome 400 and 1000 36 exposure color film to load into my Minolta 700. Somewhere.
