Bernie Sanders

Post by denjohn » Wed Apr 29, 2015 4:06 pm

Bernie Sanders’ entrance into the 2016 presidential race isn't a footnote to the inevitable coronation of Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee.

Many years ago I pitched a magazine editor on a story about Bernie Sanders, then a congressman from Vermont, who'd agreed to something extraordinary – he agreed to let me, a reporter, stick next to him without restrictions over the course of a month in congress.

Bernie Sanders Interview: 'The Business Model of Wall Street Is Fraud'
Most people are sick and tired of the system as it is now. And they are once again attempting to reject the status quo, having been badly disappointed by Obama and the Congress. And this gives rise to popular movements and even third parties.

The biggest problem with popular movements is that they either tend to be co-opted by the most powerful in the status quo and used badly, misdirected and deceived, as in the case of the Tea Party, or diffused by too many factions and lack of prioritization resulting in a lack of effective cohesion, as in the case of the Occupy Movement.

And so we have the ascendancy of the Wall Street wing of the Democratic Party, and the Koch Brothers wing of the Republicans.

And the corrupting power of Big Money underlies all of it, in part thanks to the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United that defined corporations as having the rights but not the obligations of people, and money as free speech, while doing nothing to remediate the actual use of free speech by real people except in special zones and restricted venues, subject to some of the most oppressive abuse of the secrecy laws..

Contrast this with the anti-War movement of the 1960's which was driven by a single issue: end the war in Vietnam. The message was simple and clear, and it took hold, fritghtening the political establishment and hounding first Johnson to withdraw, and then Nixon to be so weakened and desperately foolish that he caused his own downfall.

And so we have the more focused, non-establishment campaigns of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump shaking up the accepted norms in political campaigning wisdom.

I would like to think that finally, after all these misspent years, the 'same old same old,' no matter how artfully the spin machines may brand them, cannot win again.

The probability for change is higher now than in the past. But how it eventually turns out is another question. The electoral process is still very young, and many things may happen between now and next November. And the power of money and of powerful connections between the shadow government and the moneyed interests is still there, still lurking in the shadows and pulling strings.

Interesting times.................Jesse

End the Great American Drug Heist
Congress actually voted to prohibit Medicare from negotiating bulk discounts on prescription drugs. There is no excuse for this except corruption.

When the Bush administration put together the prescription drug bill in 2002, it invited lobbyists into help draft the bill. As Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson detail the story in their book “Off Center,” the drug industry contributed nearly $30 million in the 2002 election cycle, three-fourths to Republicans who controlled the White House and the Congress. In 2003, the drug industry spent more than $100 million on federal lobbying. The drug companies established fake grass-roots groups. The conservative direct mail front, United Seniors Association which featured the notorious Republican lobbyist-crook Jack Abramoff on its board, organized a full court press.

It gets worse. The projected costs of the bill were so high that the Bush administration suppressed the true costs. Thomas Scully, the head of Medicare, threatened to fire the Medicare actuary if he released the real numbers. He then left the government to become a lobbyist for the major drug companies. Billy Tauzin, the chair of the House Committee that wrote in the bill and the ban, ushered them through the House and rolled the compromised Senate Democrats in the conference committee. A few months later, he retired to become the head of PhRMA, the drug companies chief lobby, at a cool $2 million a year. You can’t make this stuff up.

Sanders detailed a five-point program for ending the rip-off. Repeal the ridiculous ban on negotiation bulk discounts for seniors. Make it easier for Americans to purchase drugs on-line from Canada where they are cheaper. Crack down on drug company fraud by stripping them of patent protection for any drug fraudulently manufactured or sold. End “pay for delay,” the scam where a drug company producing an expensive brand name drug bribes another company to delay protection of a cheaper generic drug. And force transparency from drug companies to expose the reality that taxpayers are paying for most of the R&D that goes into drugs, while the companies’ R&D is focused on how to package and market the resulting breakthroughs to pocket maximum profits.

Bernie Sanders Leading Clinton in Iowa & New Hampshire

In news from the campaign trail, a new national CNN poll shows Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is within 10 points of his rival Hillary Clinton, as support for the former secretary of state continues to erode. The survey released Thursday shows 37 percent support for Clinton, compared to 27 percent for Sanders. Speaking to CNN after the poll, Sanders outlined the differences between himself and Hillary Clinton.

Sen. Bernie Sanders "I voted against the war in Iraq. I believe, over a period of years, we should raise the minimum wage to 15 bucks an hour. I believe we should re-establish Glass-Steagall to start breaking up these large financial institutions on Wall Street. I am very opposed to our current trade policies and helping to lead the effort against the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The secretary has not made a decision on that. I am strongly against the Keystone pipeline, because I think we need to radically transform our energy system. The secretary has not made a statement on that, as well."

Meanwhile, a new Quinnipiac poll shows Bernie Sanders leading Hillary Clinton in Iowa for the first time. A new NBC poll released Sunday also shows Sanders with a nine-point lead on Clinton in New Hampshire.

Did you see the Democratic Debate?

He was classy, principled, and coherent.

CNN post-debate poll showed a 70+ % Bernie / 16% Hillary.
So they took it down and put up headlines "Clinton Takes Debate."

We need to vote in large numbers . . .

I waited with baited breath and cheered the day Bernie threw his hat into the (circus) ring. He has done nothing but encourage me since. Everything I had hoped and dreamed Obama might be Bernie seems to embody. He's seasoned and a warrior from day one. He has stated repeatedly, he will not be able to change a damn thing if elected President, without the support of citizens. A self-proclaimed democratic socialist, with a populist appeal. He has my vote. And I'm gonna kick $30 bucks to his campaign. It will be the first time I have ever kicked money to a political campaign.

On a side note, Cheryle and I visited Los Alamos today. Somehow I felt I had to enter the belly of the beast of this nation's history re: the nuclear bomb. I went to the history museum of the Manhattan Project. Soaking in the exhibits, from landscape formation, native coexistence for centuries, European influx, idealistic boy's school, (both Gore Vidal and William Burroughs were students) to war-time seizure, top secret overload, and finally I stood gazing at eight foot by one foot wide panoramic photos of Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the fruits of the scientific research were realized and applied. We've all seen them. Not as large, but nothing new. New context, proximity, something, it was sobering. Turning around, the folks gazing at the same photos were obviously of Japanese descent, fellow tourists as myself.

I fled. I could take no more. My soul is still aching, it took everything I had not to blubber and sob in grief, and even now I choke it back and tears run down my cheeks.

Oppenheimer, witnessing the successful test of "the gadget" remembered a line from Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, 'Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.'

And yet, still, I hope to visit the Trinity site, ground zero of the first blast. Go figure.

How is all that relevant to Bernie Sanders? Well he seems a bit of sanity in an insane world at this moment in time for me.

Peace, pray,

Yes, I did watch for about an hour (need my sleep--I teach science to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders). I agree that he is very kind hearted and really does have the people's best interest at the forefront of his thoughts and actions.

I watched the Dem Debate and Bernie was hard to understand at times as to me, he mumbles. I think that the GOP has what 40% of the vote the Dems 42% of the voting population so can he swing the 15-20% of the "Undecided" to him? I don't think so, Hillary yes plus some of the GOP voters that are fed up with the Tea Party antics.
HC was very polished and answered the questions with well thought out answers. Bernie's ideas are great and HC is taking some for her own now but I still think for now HC will be a better President due to her SofS experience and Global knowledge. I'd like to see Bernie as VP pushing HC on the issues facing the middleclass.

I think Bernie Sanders is a more important phenomenom than just pushing the Same Ol Same Ol a little further left.

If you listen to what he is saying, it makes perfect unsparing sense.
"I can't do without you (voters), but we need a revolution." Cue the morons who natter about Marxists. The revolution Bernie speaks of is strictly at the ballot box. We citizens need to participate as never before in order to overwhelm the money machine. That is what he is saying.
