Eugene Run to Help Change the World

Post by ruckman101 » Thu May 22, 2014 12:10 am

Yes, our political activism finds us again making a trip down to Eugene. Heads up locals (LiveonJG, DJEep, skindaddio). Wednesday, June 4.

The last time we paid a visit was March of 2013, to video the Executive Director of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF) Thomas Linzey's keynote address at the annual Public Interest Legal Environmental Law Conference (PIELC) the University of Oregon hosts.

Quite the mouthful, huh. Quite the sentence. I can pack it in.

Here's a link to the video we did of his keynote address. https://vimeo.com/channels/communityrightstv/61778883 I encourage folks to watch it and other videos we have produced on the same channel.

The "Community Rights" model he explains is and has invigorated activists working for progressive changes to the status quo with actual progress and change on many issues in many communities.

He will be in Eugene again speaking to a gathering of regional groups advocating for change under the "Community Rights" model, and we will be there again to video the event.

Community Rights Social and Meeting with Thomas Linzey
Wednesday, June 4th
The Shedd - Living Room - 868 High Street, Eugene
Light appetizers provided; No host bar

Agenda:
5:30 to 5:50 pm - Social
5:50 to 7 pm - Meeting
Introductions
Community updates - (brief; 2 mins. per community)
Discussion on state level organizing - Colorado; what it will take in Oregon
7:30 pm, Thomas Linzey

We would be thrilled to have our local Eugene friends attend and help us lug gear and witness us at work, and of course a driveway to park Bertha and us for the night to decompress and socialize a bit after the event.

It is an RSVP event, so if interested in attending and giving us a hand, let us know by pm before Wednesday, May 28.

We may be in Eugene another day to interview folks in the Lane County group who organized the event, Support Local Food Rights, http://www.localfoodrights.com.

From there we will be heading to Corvallis to interview instigators who have a citizen's initiative petition finally approved to begin gathering signatures for to put onto November's ballot that would essentially ban GMO crops from being grown in Benton County. http://bentonccrc.org

Both of these groups have embraced the Community Rights model in their efforts to enact change. With citizen initiative petitions that made the ballot and were approved by voters in this past Tuesday's Oregon primary election in Josephine and Jackson Counties banning GMO crops in those counties, it's encouraging progress.

We're planning a later trip to the Josephine and Jackson county area for more video work, as the efforts of concerned citizens over pesticides and health issues continues, http://www.freedomfrompesticidesalliance.org

Is your crew out there involved at all with the effort to demand Lowes and Home Depot stop selling neonicotinoid insecticides?

No worries. It's all a concern. Webs of connections.

Currently a group of Jackson County citizens are beginning their signature drive to place an initiative on the November ballot to ban all insecticides. Cheryle and I are planning another run to visit those folks. Ballsy, chutzpah and all on the heels of the citizen's initiative bill that just passed in last week's May Primary election that bans GMO crops in the county. By a healthy margin, 66 percent of the voters in favor.

Neighboring Josephine county also saw a similar ballot initiative pass that bans GMO crops from the county. By a similarly healthy margin. Jackson County's vote is valid. Their initiative had already been approved and signature gathering begun, so they are exempt from the recently passed state level law banning any local efforts to ban GMO crops. The Josephine County initiative is subject to that law and is expected to be immediately challenged by the state. As will the Jackson County initiative.

Neither recently passed initiative embraces the Community Rights model, but were born out of frustration attempting to deal with the concerns through existing regulatory agencies. Regulatory agencies were allowed to be established by the elite to give citizens a wind-mill to tilt at in an effort to address affronts. The first regulatory agency established regulated Railroad companies.

The Community Rights model forces Corporations to argue in court that their rights are superior and thus over-ride the rights of actual citizens. It's going to get interesting.

We'll be interviewing a Bee guy. I'll ask him about the neonicotinoid insecticides.

Good. It would stand to figure that bees were the collapse of the modern human civilization.

Suicide By Pesticide
What the honey bee die-off means for humanity
http://www.peakprosperity.com/insider/9 ... -pesticide
As you are aware, honey bees have been suffering from something called Colony Collapse Disorder. In practice, what this means is that the bees simply vanish from their hives, leaving behind their most precious worldly possessions: honey and larvae.

What causes these mysterious vanishing acts has been something of a mystery. But because the phenomenon began really ramping up in 2006, we can focus in on some suspects.

While it’s always possible that the bees are suffering ‘death from a thousand cuts’ -- where it’s no one specific thing but rather a wide range of minor insults, ranging from loss of forage to herbicides to fungicides to pesticides -- there’s actually quite strong evidence pointing to a specific class of pesticides called neonicotinoids.

This class of pesticides is massively and indiscriminately toxic. More specific to our investigation here, it was only introduced into widespread use shortly before the massive bee die-offs began.

Court revokes approval of insecticide, citing 'alarming' decline in bees
http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-m ... story.html
An appeals court Thursday overturned federal approval of an insecticide used on a variety of crops, ruling that it could hasten an already “alarming” decline in bees.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said the federal Environmental Protection Agency approved the insecticide, sulfoxaflor, based on flawed and limited information. Initial studies showed the insecticide was highly toxic to honey bees.

“Bees are essential to pollinate important crops and in recent years have been dying at alarming rates,” Judge Mary M. Schroeder, a Carter appointee, wrote for a three-judge panel.

Beekeepers and beekeeping organizations challenged the EPA's 2013 approval of sulfoxaflor, made by Dow Agrosciences and designed for use on many crops, including citrus, cotton, canola, strawberries, soybeans and wheat.

Janette Brimmer, who represented the beekeepers for Earthjustice, an environmental group, said the ruling affects the entire country and will force states to withdraw more local rules that have permitted the insecticide.

Federal appeals courts "almost never" overturn EPA approvals of pesticides, Brimmer said.

"This was a pretty significant decision," she said. "It revokes the registration, and it is a national registration."
