I have been re-reading Kurt Vonnegut's God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. Even after half a century, it remains the best book I've read about what's wrong with great wealth in this country, and how it fails to see the need to help those for those for whom society has no ready use, and who really do need some sort of government or charitable subsistence .

I have no doubt that Mitt Romney wouldn't understand a word of it. Neither would Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck or anybody who classifies himself or herself as a "compassionate conservative."

We had Mark Twain to speak for the common man in the nineteenth century, and Kurt Vonnegut in the twentieth century. I'm still waiting for whoever takes up the torch in the twenty-first century. It can't come soon enough for me.
