Justice Scalia makes an interesting suggestion

Post by Lanval » Sat Apr 19, 2014 1:29 pm

Justice Scalia suggests that if taxes go too high, people should revolt. I wonder if the opposite is true, then? Should we revolt because the rich are stealing the life from this country?

That's what happened the turn of the 19 century with the formation of unions, general strikes and the 40 hour work week. Strikes hit at the heart of the Rich and their profit margins. I know two kinds of Rich friends and the ones that feel they are "Better and Smarter" than the rest of us 99%, I have lots of arguments with. But atleast it's civil and we remain friends. One of them is visiting us right now and I have lots of fun shooting down his "rights to keep his profits".

Yes. "Revolt" in the modern idiom might not be like our grandpappy's revolts.

"I am revolting."
"You are."
"That's not like cool."
"Do we have to go outside?"
"Yeah, my iPad says its raining."
"No way."

Well, it could be that all the nerds/hackers just shut down all the "Rich" peoples computers, internet, electricity, water and BMW/Porsches. Their easy world would be a tough place for them to survive for long. Walking to the store, using what cash they have access to etc vs the easy life of the rich and famous of instant gratification.
Hey, this could be a new indie movie!

On January 5, 1914, the Ford Motor Company took the radical step of doubling pay to $5 a day and cut shifts from nine hours to eight. In 1926, the Ford Motor Company became one of the first companies in America to adopt a five-day, 40-hour week.

In 1941, Ford agreed to a collective bargaining agreement with the UAW.

Wiki-"Unions began forming in the mid-19th century in response to the social and economic impact of the industrial revolution. National labor unions began to form in the post-Civil War Era. The Knights of Labor emerged as a major force in the late 1880s, but it collapsed because of poor organization, lack of effective leadership, disagreement over goals, and strong opposition from employers and government forces.

The American Federation of Labor, founded in 1886 and led by Samuel Gompers until his death in 1924, proved much more durable. It arose as a loose coalition of various local unions. It helped coordinate and support strikes and eventually became a major player in national politics, usually on the side of the Democrats."

"The median weekly income for union workers was $943 in 2012, compared with $742 for nonunion workers.[30]

A review conducted by the federal government on pay scale shows that employees in a labor union earn up to 33% more income than their nonunion counterparts, as well as having more job security, safer and higher-quality work conditions, and additional benefits."

"Economist Joseph Stiglitz has asserted that, "Strong unions have helped to reduce inequality, whereas weaker unions have made it easier for CEOs, sometimes working with market forces that they have helped shape, to increase it." The decline in unionization since World War II in the United States has been associated with a pronounced rise in income and wealth inequality.[8]"
