are they really for the type 4 and not modified ones for a type 1?

there should be a temperature range stamped into it that would identify it correctly one way or the other.

Yes, they are really type 4 thermostats. There is a temp rating stamped on them. They are spoken for and pending payment.

Okay, I will keep you in mind. Early vanagons used the same thermostats if you need one right now.
